TAKE THIS JOB... (2003)
Episode Four "Death's Door"
200,000 Americans work in the funeral industry, dealing with death everyday.

In this episode of TAKE THIS JOB..., we go behind the scenes of a funeral home, where they are caring for people, deceased and grieving, and we follow a woman, whose challenge is to sell us our own funerals ahead of time.

At the Affordable Casket and Moanalua Mortuary in Hawaii, the team tries to bring eternal peace with dignity to a budget conscious clientele. Claus Hansen founded Affordable Casket to fill the budget conscious niche in the Hawaiian death business, but there is always the challenge of generating new business. "We don't have a business where people say, 'Wow! That was great. Let's do it again tomorrow'", explains Claus. His mortician/embalmer Yolanda Milligan is fulfilling a childhood dream of working with the dead, and faces the challenge of a busy day packed with cremations, embalming, and restorative work. Kyle Watanabe is responsible for the funeral of the matriarch of a large family. He manages their grief, and handles the family's concerns that the make-up of their loved one be absolutely perfect for the viewing of the body.

In Florida, we follow Melissa McCall, a six week rookie pre need funeral saleswoman, whose new job is on the line as she faces the challenge of her first solo pre-need sale. Melissa lost her husband at a young age, and the experience led to a new commission-based calling - helping others plan ahead for the worst. "It's a hard sell, because people don't want to preplan. They don't want to talk about it. I hear it all the time, 'I'm not into funerals'. I'm not into funerals either!" Melissa has to generate her own leads and we watch as she is mentored by her boss, Suzanne Elkins, in the finer points of cold-calling and door-to-door canvassing. Her day builds to her big test - will she be able to sell the Plechers, a healthy couple in their fourties, their burial or cremation in advance?
