TAKE THIS JOB... (2003)
Episode Five "Easy Money"
Everyone wants money. Especially when it comes easy!
Each year, over $2 billion is won in America (and over $60 billion is lost). In this episode of TAKE THIS JOB..., we go behind the scenes with the "Prize Patrol" of the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes, as they draw a million dollar prizewinner and travel 3,000 miles from New York to San Francisco to award the prize to an unsuspecting couple. Their day of giving money away is contrasted with that of a rookie professional gambler in Las Vegas, who is pursuing the American dream of trying to win it at the blackjack tables and through the skill of "dice control" on the crap tables.
As Executive Director of the "Prize Patrol", Dave Sayer has given away over $185 million and knocked on over 300 doors to surprise the winners. Today, Dave is heading out to San Francisco to award the prize to an 82 year old woman.
The rush to get to the winner's door is not only about giving away the prize, but also to film and immediately edit the prize giveaway into a commercial that will be beamed by satellite back to the East Coast on broadcast to millions on the nightly news. Accompanying Dave on his race against the clock are Dave's assistant, Elizabeth Cipoletti, on her first million dollar giveaway, and veteran PCH cameraman Jeff Byrd. Will they make it to the winner's house in time? Will the winner be there? Will they get just the right kind of reaction to make a good television commercial?
Beau Parker, a former contractor, moved to Las Vegas to try to make it as a professional gambler. He is one of 7,000 people that move to Vegas every month, often sharing the same dream. Beau used to be an "action" player, now he's trying to discipline himself. For Beau, it's about winning a small amount everyday, but he's still addicted to the adrenaline of beating the casinos. We follow Beau as he "heads to work" at the casinos with a bankroll of $5,000, and it's a roller coaster ride. By the end of the morning, he has lost almost one thousand dollars on the blackjack tables, but is undeterred. Beau is also one of the 1,000 gamblers in the US who is a "dice controller". By influencing the dice through certain grips and throws, he attempts to roll specific numbers on the craps tables. This skill has come to the attention of Larry Grossman, who hosts the nation's largest gambling radio show and invites Beau on to challenge this "dice control" method. In the second half of his day, Beau assembles a team of top dice controllers; Sharpshooter, The Dominator, Soft Touch, etc., to hit the craps table at a number of casinos. As the Prize Patrol closes in on their winner, Beau and his team try to bring down the house. Will he be able to reverse the morning losing streak?
