IT'S A LIVING (2002)

Produced by Hybrid Films for A&E, IT'S A LIVING is a new, light-hearted documentary about the behind-the-scenes reality of the workplace. It's a fun look at the jobs people love to do, love to hate, hate to do, jobs that are stereotyped, or simply different. The approach is a day in the life/life in a day.

THE TWO HOUR IT'S A LIVING SPECIAL

The Big Sell and Waldorf Astoria
The first hour goes inside the high pressure world of salesmen at the largest used car dealership in Las Vegas and then the top Mary Kay cosmetics saleswoman in Dallas. The second hour profiles the hard work, stress and sweat behind the glamour that goes into making the Waldorf Astoria Hotel New York's luxury grand hotel of choice.

Hour One - The Big Sell

10% of all people working in the US are in sales. In the hilarious first hour of IT'S A LIVING we see the contrasting styles of car sales and cosmetics in Las Vegas and Dallas, Texas. "The Chopper" an aspiring rap artist, runs the largest used car dealership in Las Vegas, has his own TV show where he promotes deals and "chops" prices. Every Saturday he makes his salesmen dress up in Speedo swimsuits and genie costumes to bring in the customers.

This Saturday, we follow him, his top salesman Will and two first time car salesman, as they try to sell 60 cars in one day while battling the customers' stereotype of traditional "greasy" car salesmen.

The day at the car lot in Vegas is interwoven with following Kimberly Walker-Roop in Dallas. She has had the most rapid ascent ever within the Mary Kay sales organization. At 26, she has a handsome husband, two children, a dream house, a pink Cadillac and a six-figure income from Mary Kay. She works with her mother and sister, also Mary Kay sales directors, and together they rush to put together their monthly "rally night" where they recruit more saleswomen and give prizes to their top producers. In the course of their day we follow Krystal, Kimberly's sister in her attempts to scour shopping malls for new customers, and take a trip to corporate HQ where our sales ladies seek inspiration in the offices and museum of the late Mary Kay.

Hour Two - Waldorf Astoria

The Waldorf Astoria hotel is synonymous with luxury and New York high society. In this entertaining hour, inside one busy day, viewers will go on a first -time-ever "back of the house" journey into the heart of this mammoth 1,400 hundred room hotel. We meet the people who make that promise of luxury a reality - from the showmanship of the doormen to the maintenance men at the ready with toilet plungers. We follow Scott Woldman, the Waldorf's own wedding planner, who holds the hands of brides and keeps the grooms sober until the big event, as he prepares for a big society wedding.

We follow the banquet chefs, Josh and Robert, as they prepare for the 300 hungry wedding guests who all want their fillet mignon cooked a different way.

Nick the troubleshooter spends his day dealing with problems large and small throughout the hotel. And the cast of characters also includes the unflappable concierge Michael, who books restaurants and theater tickets, prepares for Senator Hillary Clinton's arrival and runs errands for "It girl" Nicky Hilton - a permanent resident of the hotel.

From salesmen to chambermaids, IT'S A LIVING is a fun-filled trip into the lighter side of the heavy lifting that makes the workday go by.
